Week 1 · Understand

Why diets fail, and how fat loss actually works

Every diet you've tried worked for a while. Here's why it stopped, and why this time is different.

Guide 1 of 9Week 15-minute read

Yes, that's a cookie.Nothing is banned in this kit, including in my own week.

The one rule every diet shares

Keto, slimming clubs, intermittent fasting, shakes, "clean eating". They all look different, but every one that works does the same thing underneath: you eat a little less energy than your body uses. That gap is called a calorie deficit, and it's the only way fat loss happens.

When you're in a deficit, your body makes up the difference from its stored energy, which is mostly body fat. No food is "fattening" on its own, and none is magic. It's the total over days and weeks that counts.

A deficit is a small gap, not starvation Energy in food and drink Energy out body, movement, training the deficit
Your body covers the gap from stored fat. A modest gap you can live with beats a big one you can't keep up.

So why did your last diet stop working?

If you've lost the same half a stone more than once, it isn't a willpower problem. It's almost always one of these four:

1. It was too hardA big deficit makes you hungry, tired and snappy. Without noticing, you move less, so you burn less, and the gap closes.
2. It banned foodsNo bread, no chocolate, no wine. The banned food becomes the thing you think about, until one slip turns into a full weekend off.
3. It had no plan for real lifeIt worked from Monday to Thursday. Then came a birthday, a holiday or a week from hell at work, and the plan had nothing to say.
4. It had no plan for afterwardsYou hit the number and went back to "normal". The weight came back because the habits never changed.

The all-or-nothing loop

Most of the women I coach know this loop by heart. Be strict, slip once, decide the week is "ruined", give up, regain, and start again next Monday.

All or nothing Strict diet One slip "Week ruined" Give up, regain Start Monday 80/20 Your system One slip Next meal: back on No restart. No lost week. The slip costs one meal, not a month.
A slip only becomes a setback when the plan has no room for it.
A slip is a data point, not a verdict.

One takeaway doesn't undo a week. Deciding the week is ruined does. In this kit, the rule is simple: whatever happened, your next meal is a normal one.

Real food, cooked in a normal kitchen. No plain chicken and rice in plastic tubs.Every meal in this kit is something you'd happily serve the family.

What's different this time

This kit doesn't ask for more willpower. It gives you a system that still works on a bad week. Every week of the 30 days runs on four habits:

Protein at every mealIt keeps you full and protects your muscle while you lose fat. Guide 2 shows you how.
The plate ruleA simple way to build meals without weighing or apps. Guide 4.
Daily stepsThe easiest calories you'll ever burn. Your step plan starts this week.
Three strength sessionsAbout 45 minutes each, three times a week, so you lose fat, not shape.

Treats, wine and meals out stay in. Guide 5 shows you how to plan them in, so they don't knock you off course.

What to expect

A healthy pace is about 0.5–1% of your body weight a week. For someone at 75kg, that's roughly 0.4–0.75kg. Some weeks will be faster, some will show nothing, and the scale will bounce day to day. That's normal, and Guide 7 explains why.

The goal isn't a perfect week.

It's a week you could repeat for twelve months. That's what keeps the weight off.

The women who get results with me aren't the most disciplined. They're the ones with a plan for a bad week. That's what you're building now.Paddy

Your action this week

Three small things, nothing more

  • Write down your last two diet attempts and which of the four reasons ended each one.
  • Track your steps for three days without changing anything. That's your baseline for the step plan.
  • Open your workout plan and book your three sessions for this week into your diary.
